Summary

Visual effects work is demanding on your computer.  Long durations of intensive CPU and memory usage are quite the norm. This type of work really does benefit from an operating system that is suited to such tasks. Enter Linux!

Linux is renowned for performance and stability so it's perfect for complex vfx tasks. By building a Linux workstation you can ensure you get the most out of the resources you have and experience reliability that instills confidence that your renders and simulations keep going.

However - it can be intimidating to setup a Linux system and install your applications for the first time. The learning curve is steeper and a minimum level of knowledge of operating systems is expected.

Studios also have dedicated Linux administrators. As you get started with Linux, it is highly recommended to start with a Distro that gives you the benefits you seek, while providing you a decent daily use experience. If you have to keep switching back to windows you'll soon find yourself not using your Linux install.

Mint is a great choice for ease of use, day to day activities and very capable of  VFX work. Once your comfortable with Linux - you can easily switch to another Distro.
